16 Things I Learned While 16

Hey everyone! As you may or may not know, I just turned 17 this past week, and, honestly, it kind of hit me hard that I’ll be considered an adult in a year. I can’t believe how fast this year went by, and looking back at all the things I saw and did and the people I met, even though there were some bad times, 16 was a pretty amazing year. So, I decided on a whim this morning to write this post because I feel like I did a lot of ~growing up~ this year in terms of realizing what’s really important (of course, I still have a lot to learn so these are just a few things I was reflecting on). Anyways, I hope at least one of these inspires you, and if you’d like more of these “non-food” posts (or not) let me know!

  1. It’s okay to let friends go, but it can be really difficult and heartbreaking
  2. You don’t have everything figured out and you shouldn’t – no one does
  3. Don’t be afraid to do something just because it’s “different” or other people don’t understand it
  4. Never turn down chocolate or a home-cooked meal
  5. Spend less time taking photos and enjoy the moment, but also do take *some* pictures because you’ll cherish them later on
  6. Sometimes you’re going to have to go outside of your comfort zone to improve
  7. Try going for a walk if you’re angry or upset – I bet you’ll be in a better mood when you get back
  8. Never be ashamed to ask for help
  9. Being busy and stressed out all the time does not equal being successful
  10. A lot can be done with an open mind and a willingness to listen and learn
  11. Don’t let others’ expectations of you become your expectations of yourself
  12. You can’t force an experience or a relationship- it has to just happen on it own
  13. You shouldn’t feel bad or feel like you always need an explanation for saying “no”
  14. Stay in touch with your family and friends: give grandma a call, go for a hike with your friends, visit that aunt that you haven’t seen since Christmas
  15. Most teachers don’t want you to fail. Reach out to them – usually they are pretty cool and eager to help
  16. The world is much bigger than your school, your city, or even you country – EXPLORE IT
